Grecia, February 26, 2024. – The medical device manufacturing company Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical will invest over US$20 million to establish its first manufacturing plant in Latin America at the Evolution Free Zone in Grecia, Costa Rica.

This morning, top executives of Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical announced the investment during an event attended by the Vice President of the Republic, Stephan Brunner, the Acting Minister of Foreign Trade (COMEX), Indiana Trejos, and CEO of the Trade and Investment Promotion Agency of Costa Rican (PROCOMER), Laura López.

Linda Muroski, President of Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical, stated: “We want to provide customers with finished medical devices, components, and assemblies in one location. By producing the components at a single site and moving them to assembly under one roof, we reduce freight costs and management of multiple vendors for our customers, saving them money so they can be more competitive and profitable. This approach also allows customers to focus on what they do best – creating life-changing innovations.

“This inauguration confirms that we are charting the right path, validating all the effort and hard work of this government to provide an optimal investment climate capable of tackling the challenges of the global economy, where more companies like Trelleborg can join the robust ecosystem of multinational enterprises that have found in our country the optimal ally for their operations,” expressed the Vice President of the Republic, Stephan Brunner.

For this investment, the Swedish-baded company will build a 10,000 square meters manufacturing plant, which is expected to be operational by 2025. In addition, Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical plans to recruit 100 employees within the first year of operations in the region to enhance their presence in the Latin American market.

Currently, 92 companies in the life sciences sector operate in Costa Rica, carrying out a wide range of processes that encompass the comprehensive needs of the human body. “The arrival of Trelleborg to our country further solidifies this sector and the importance of Costa Rica as a global exporter of medical devices. Last year, these exports reached a record figure of US$7.624 billion, representing 41% of the total exports”, stated Indiana Trejos, Acting Minister of Foreign Trade.

Laura López emphasized, “This investment aligns with PROCOMER’s new strategy for attracting foreign direct investment, aiming to foster the development of communities beyond the Greater Metropolitan Area and bring better opportunities for their inhabitants. We are proud of Trelleborg’s announcement, a company that contributes to diversifying the origin of investments coming to the country and further consolidating Costa Rica’s medical devices sector and its contribution to our national export portfolio.”

Álvaro Carballo, President of CODE Development Group, the company behind Evolution Free Zone, highlighted, “Within our park, we provide the ideal conditions for the operation of the world’s most innovative medical device companies.
