Cartago, Costa Rica – May 8, 2025 – Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies (Terumo BCT), a global leader in medical technologies, announces the opening of a new Center of Excellence in Research and Development (R&D) in Cartago, Costa Rica.
Terumo BCT’s products, software and services enable customers to collect and process blood and cells to help treat complex diseases and conditions. This milestone represents the company’s latest investment in the region, following the successful opening of its manufacturing facility in Cartago in October 2021.
The new R&D Center of Excellence will initially focus on engineering support— a key function that ensures the safety, reliability and ongoing performance of the company’s comprehensive portfolio of medical devices and software.
This work, which includes lifecycle management and continuous improvement of existing product lines, is critical to maintaining customer satisfaction and enabling the reliable global supply of life-saving medical technologies used daily by healthcare professionals and patients.
The center will also collaborate closely with Terumo BCT’s global network of R&D Centers of Excellence, including sites in Lakewood, Colorado (U.S.) and Thiruvananthapuram, India, as well as other Terumo Centers of Excellence already established in the region. These strong connections will provide Costa Rican associates with access to global collaboration, cross-training and technical engineering career paths in medical device engineering.
“The launch of our R&D Center in Cartago reflects our commitment to strengthening the long-term performance of our technologies,” said Luis Castro, Director of Terumo BCT Costa Rica’s R&D Center of Excellence. “This center will leverage Costa Rica’s technical talent to ensure that healthcare professionals can rely on our devices and software every day. It is purposeful work with a direct impact on patients.”
“Terumo Blood and Cell Technologies’ expansion highlights Costa Rica’s ability to attract high value-added investment in the life sciences sector. This announcement strengthens the country’s positioning as a strategic hub for innovation, advanced engineering and medical device technology development. It also contributes to strengthening local talent, driving knowledge transfer and expanding opportunities for productive linkages within the national economy. From the Ministry of Foreign Trade, we reaffirm our commitment to continue creating competitive conditions that foster foreign direct investment and generate a positive impact for Costa Rica and for the global markets we serve,” said Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade.
The company plans to hire up to thirty specialized professionals in electromechanical and software engineering for medical devices over the next year, reinforcing its investment in qualified talent and the country’s innovation potential.
The company’s investment in Costa Rica supports its global mission: expanding access to healthcare, addressing unmet medical needs, and developing technologies that unlock the potential of blood and cells to improve patients’ lives.
Candidates with experience in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, Design Quality Engineering and Project Management are invited to meet the Terumo BCT team at Booth G15 at the Talent CR Job Fair, organized by PROCOMER at the Costa Rica Convention Center on May 9 and 10, where recruitment will take place for roles within the new Center of Excellence.
“The creation of Terumo BCT’s Center of Excellence is yet another example that Costa Rica is a leader in attracting and retaining investment, where human talent is the key differentiator. This is reflected in the job opportunities the company will be offering this Friday and Saturday at the Talent Costa Rica job fair,” added Laura López, CEO of the Trade and Investment Promotion Agency of Costa Rica (PROCOMER).
