Peruvian packaging manufacture company will create 100 new jobs in Orotina

  • EcoCups inaugurates first production phase with 43,000 sq. ft. in Parque La Ceiba.

San José, January 10, 2024. EcoCups, a Peruvian-owned company that manufactures eco-friendly packaging, announced that it will set up a production plant in La Ceiba in Orotina, Costa Rica, employing 100 people in the first year of operation. This brings new opportunities and development to this region outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM).

The announcement of the $5 million investment was made this morning in Orotina, with the presence of senior executives from EcoCups, as well as the Minister of Foreign Trade, Manuel Tovar; the General Manager of the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER), Laura López; and municipal representatives.

Founded in 2016, EcoCups is dedicated to the manufacture of cardboard packages and customized packaging for the food industry, with its main markets being the United States, Central America, and South America.

“EcoCups International, ECISA, is a company with many years of experience in the food packaging industry, which has recently established itself in Costa Rica. In recent years, we have focused on the development of packaging solutions for food products, cups, bowls, plates, and wrappers, which help to reduce the use of single-use plastic and, consequently, the impact that the use and disposal of these products is having on the planet. Costa Rica, a country aligned with initiatives to preserve nature, has embraced our ideals to offer truly biodegradable products, without the intervention of chemicals or additional processes,” said Karel Hartinger, EcoCups CEO.

Hartinger added that “we are honestly concerned about the consequences that our consumption and habits can have on the planet. We are EcoCups International, a Costa Rican company with a global focus, concerned with providing the best to achieve a better quality of life and preserve our planet.”

“One of the priorities of this government and of the Foreign Direct Investment Policy, led by COMEX, is to attract companies to the regions outside the GAM, especially to the areas that most need it. That is why today, we are pleased to announce the arrival of EcoCups to Orotina, a canton that has a lot of potential and that we are sure will take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead with this company,” stated Manuel Tovar, Minister of Foreign Trade.

On the other hand, Laura López, General Manager of PROCOMER, added, “We continue working to ensure that the benefits of foreign direct investment reach all regions of the country. For this reason, we celebrate EcoCups’ decision to establish its operations in a region outside the Greater Metropolitan Area, such as Orotina. We hope that, hand in hand with this and other companies, more employment and development opportunities will be facilitated for the residents of the area. To EcoCups, we wish them much success and reiterate PROCOMER’s commitment to continue working together in each of the following phases of their operation.”

In this first phase, which starts operating as of the announcement, the EcoCups plant is about 44,000 square meters, and a second phase of the project is expected to be operational by 2025, reaching 193,750 square feet.
