Bayer

Costa Rica has positioned itself as a trusted destination for agricultural research and innovation projects, supported by skilled talent, favorable agro-climatic conditions, and a stable institutional environment. Bayer’s operation in the country reflects Costa Rica’s potential as a platform for high-value activities within the Agritech sector.

Since 1997, Bayer has operated a cotton seed Research and Development station in Cañas, Guanacaste, through its Crop Science division. This center conducts commercial evaluation trials and genetic breeding of biotech cotton, assessing up to 50,000 varieties annually across 17 hectares of greenhouse facilities, primarily serving the U.S. market.

As part of the expansion of its operations, Bayer incorporated farms in La Palma de Abangares and Chomes, Puntarenas, dedicated to advanced material selection and seed multiplication. Through this integrated operation, Costa Rica exports more than 40 tons of seeds annually, strengthening its participation in global value chains and generating skilled employment in rural areas.

In 2024, Bayer added a new phase to its genetic breeding program in Costa Rica, reaffirming the company’s confidence in the country as a hub for agricultural innovation. This success story confirms Costa Rica as a strategic partner for companies seeking to conduct agricultural research, scale operations, and serve international markets.
